Skype Beta is a program that lets you turn your computer and web cam into a chat messaging system for talking to all your friends and loved ones.

Skype is a type of Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) that lets you use any internet connection to talk with others. Once you click the download button located right here on the page, you can download a copy right to your computer. It generally only takes a few minutes, and you can spend a few more minutes setting up your account.

With previous versions of Skype, the program required that you open Skype, open your Facebook account, search for the person you wanted to talk to and jump through a number of other hoops before sharing a simple conversation. Skype Beta now comes with Facebook already integrated into the program. This lets you log into Skype with your Facebook details before starting a conversation. The program lets you continue conversations you had in the past, view your Facebook feed, and even post status updates.

Skype Beta is great for those who want to use both programs at the same time. When logged in, you can actually view instant updates when your friends post, search for new friends to add, upload videos, and do other things with your Facebook account while chatting with someone via Skype. Though you will still need a web cam to have a video chat, you can use the Facebook chat feature over Skype to send pictures, text, stickers, and emoticons back and forth with friends.

Though it primarily works with Facebook, Skype Beta also works with other messaging systems. If you have a Microsoft account, you can log in with your ID and password to chat with those logged into Hotmail, XBOX Live, and other systems that use Microsoft accounts.

The main reason people use Skype is because they want to have video chats with their loved ones. Even if you have family or friends living on the other side of the country or in an entirely different country, you can chat with them and feel like they are right there in the room with you. It will keep track of your friends' phone numbers and profiles to help you stay connected. As Skype Beta is still in the early testing stages, you might prefer waiting until a full version becomes available.

Pros:

  • Full integration of Facebook features
  • Can search for and connect with users who have Microsoft accounts
  • Allows for traditional chat and video conversations
  • Organizes your friends according to their profiles and phone numbers
  • Can use it with XBOX Live

Cons:

  • Limits what you can see on Facebook
  • Won't appeal to those who do not have social networking accounts
  • Sometimes loses its connection
  • Still in the beta phase
